If your kitchen feels dated, the cabinets are usually the reason — and the quote to replace them is usually a shock. Before you commit to a full remodel, it's worth knowing that refinishing typically costs a small fraction of replacement and takes days rather than weeks.
Start with the boxes. Open a door and look at the cabinet carcass and face frame. If the structure is solid, the doors close square, and the layout works for how you cook, you are an excellent candidate for painting. Refinishing changes the color and finish — it cannot change the footprint.
Replace instead of paint when the boxes are water-damaged or delaminating, when particleboard shelves are sagging badly, or when the layout itself is the problem. No finish fixes a kitchen where the fridge blocks a drawer.
Here's what a real cabinet job looks like, because this is where contractors cut corners. Every door and drawer front comes off and gets labeled and mapped. Everything gets degreased — and around a cooktop that means more than a quick wipe, because invisible cooking oil is the number one cause of peeling cabinet paint. Then all surfaces are scuff-sanded, a bonding primer goes on, and the finish is sprayed rather than brushed.
That last part matters. A brushed cabinet door shows brush marks under kitchen lighting forever. Sprayed cabinet-grade enamel levels out to a smooth, factory-look surface — and it cures far harder than wall paint, which is why it survives fingernails, cleaning products, and daily use.
Give the finish time. Even a fast-curing enamel keeps hardening for a couple of weeks. We reinstall the doors as soon as they're safe to handle, but going easy on them for the first two weeks pays off for the next ten years.
